How the five R's can dramatically improve our environment in Knebworth?

We have all heard of recycling our waste materials and for many years, some councils have provided special recycling bins to help residents avoid putting too much waste into landfill. But recycling is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to helping keep our environment healthy.

On top of the five steps we should all be taking to reduce the burden on our environment, we should also be reducing the product miles that our consumables create. Instead of buying produce from overseas, check beforehand to see if a similar product can be sourced locally as this reduces the transport costs and extra impact on our delicate eco system. The five @#39;R@#39; are:

Refuse

Refuse to buy or accept products that can harm you, your company and the environment. Use your spending power to tell Knebworth companies what you do and do not want.

  • Think about stuff that some companies give away. These may be plastic pens, extra loyalty cards or key fobs and carrier bags. Simply refuse to accept them.
  • Refuse to buy harmful products, such as cleaning solutions. There are so many alternatives available today that do far less or no harm to the environment.
  • Refuse chemicals that contain solvents and use alternatives that are water based. These are not only better for the environment, they will not have you gasping for air when using them either.
  • Refuse to buy materials from shops with unnecessary packaging that you will later have to dispose of. Pre packaged fruit, vegetables and meat are prime culprits, buy them loose, they will probably be cheaper too.

Reduce

Keep asking yourself the question, What is the minimum amount necessary to get the job done? Reduce your usage of certain products so that you use less. Think about what you use and buy. Could you use less of it? Reduce the amount of energy you use to heat your home by closing doors and only heating the most used areas. Why use a massive squirt of washing up liquid when a tiny squirt will do the same job and why heat an entire house when you spend most of your time in the living room? This mind set will also save you a lot of money too.

Reuse

Reuse something you already have instead of buying something new. Replace needing a single use item, with something you can use over and over again. Both of these options will save you money as well as helping the environment.

  • Reuse printer cartridges and have them refilled.
  • Reuse shipping containers such as boxes, inserts and cartons. Please do not just disgard them. Consider the amount of packaging a tiny item from Amazon has, it is quite over the top.
  • Slowly replace any single use items with reusable ones, such as reusable water bottles and food containers.
  • Reuse packaging fillers and coverings like bubble wrap or packaging beads.

Repurpose

Repurpose your products simply means to take something you already have and use it for something else instead.

  • Repurpose metal cans and buckets for making plant containers.
  • Repurpose wooden crates or pallets into benches or shelves. A little sanding or planing transforms them.
  • Repurpose scrap paper for taking notes.
  • Repurpose wood shavings to help soak up spills in the workshop.

Recycle

And if none of the above are a viable option, recycle it. Possibly you missed the opportunity to refuse or reduce because you just were unaware of the alternatives when the purchases were made. Maybe there is no alternative. Recycling is a great way to open your eyes to all that you dispose of and a chance to rethink your future purchases.

  • Recycle all electronics.
  • Recycle food wastes into composted soil or as a food for a local farm. Many farmers will often be happy to take this waste.
  • Recycle all the basics you can such as paper, plastic, metal and glass.
  • Recycle all your fabric, even if it happens to be stained or ripped clothing, it can still be recycled.

Hoarding costs you money

Many hoarding behaviours can be put down to past experiences the individual has gone through. This may be periods of abject poverty, that makes them feel the need to hoard items just in case they could be used to good effect at a later stage. It is now thought that hoarding can adversely affect your finances. This may sound like a strange statement to make, but a bad financial situation is something we all want to avoid.

Time to have a good clearout

We've all been there. Our house has become a little cluttered and we feel the need to have a good tidy up. Research has shown that living in a cluttered environment can even have adverse effects on a person's sleep.

The waste consequences of Covid

In an age where we are constantly looking for ways to cut down on our waste, it seems strange that so much extra waste has been created by the covid pandemic. The vast majority of this is made from plastic, so surely it could be recycled, but when one considers what it has been used for, it renders it potentially hazardous waste.

New Bill designed to ban export of plastic waste

When we throw away our waste materials, few of us know or possibly even wonder where this waste will end up. Many often believe that if it goes into the recycling bin, it will be recycled and therefore they will be doing their bit for the good of the environment. Fly tipping: A modern day curse

Fly tipping is simply another term used to describe illegal dumping of all manner of waste material, it is also called fly dumping. Whatever term is used, it is the dumping of waste illegally instead of using an authorised method such as kerbside collection or using an authorised rubbish dump. It is the illegal deposit of any waste onto land, including waste dumped or tipped on a site with no licence to accept waste.

Plastic use in road and pavement construction is not exactly a new concept, but it does appear to be increasing. Using plastic waste to make plastic roads is definitely on the upward trend. Plastic roads mainly use plastic carrier bags, disposable cups and PET bottles that are collected from landfill sites prior to burial and are a vital part of this construction material.

A scary statistic is that more than eight million tons of waste plastic ends up in the ocean every single year.
